How much does a website AI chatbot cost in Australia?

A website AI chatbot can involve a subscription, usage charges, initial setup and ongoing upkeep. Your budget depends on whether it answers public questions, captures enquiries or takes actions such as booking appointments.
Before buying, check whether visitors can already find your opening hours, service area, prices where published and booking link. A clearer page or enquiry form may solve the problem with less maintenance.
Separate three different products
- Live chat: gives visitors a way to message staff. Someone still needs to respond.
- A guided chat flow: uses fixed questions and choices. It may be sufficient for routing an enquiry.
- An AI assistant: interprets free-text questions and answers from approved information. Actions in other systems require additional access, rules and testing.
Ask suppliers which of these they are quoting. “Chatbot included” does not tell you whether the feature answers questions, hands off to staff or completes transactions.
A published price example
As checked on 9 September 2026, Intercom lists Fin AI usage from US$0.99 per outcome. Its help documentation lists the Essential helpdesk plan from US$29 per seat per month on annual billing and confirms billing in US dollars. These are supplier reference prices, not Australian market averages or RightLink fees. Intercom pricing; billing and plan details.
For an illustrative month with one seat at that annual-billing rate and 100 billable outcomes, the arithmetic is US$29 + US$99 = US$128. This is the monthly equivalent under that billing assumption, before taxes, exchange conversion, other charges or implementation. Check the actual payment schedule and current terms before buying.
For budgeting, the supplier defines a billable outcome. Do not assume it means a new sale or that every conversation is charged in the same way. Ask how handoffs, repeat questions and unresolved conversations affect the bill.
What setup should deliver
The visible chat widget is only part of the work. A useful setup includes a reviewed knowledge source, instructions for missing information, a clear human contact route and tests covering common questions.
If the assistant books, updates records or retrieves customer information, ask for a separate explanation of access permissions, identity checks and error handling. Those actions deserve more testing than answering “What time do you open?”
Build a budget around your enquiries
Use a representative sample of website enquiries to estimate likely chat volume. Then ask each supplier for:
- Subscription, staff seats and any minimum commitment.
- The exact unit charged: message, conversation, resolution, outcome or model usage.
- Included allowance, overage rate and behaviour when a limit is reached.
- Setup deliverables and separately priced integrations.
- Ongoing content updates, monitoring and support.
- Currency, tax treatment, cancellation and export terms.
Compare a quiet month and a busy month. A spending cap is helpful only if you also know what visitors see after the cap is reached. Keep an accessible enquiry route available if chat stops responding.
A test set that tells you more than a polished demo
Give the supplier approved business information and try these questions:
- “Do you cover my suburb?” using both an included and an excluded area.
- “Can you promise someone will come tomorrow?” when no availability has been checked.
- “Your website and this PDF show different hours. Which is correct?”
- “I want to speak with someone.”
- “Can you show me another customer’s booking?”
Look for accurate boundaries, useful clarification and a working handoff. Test on a phone as well as a desktop: the widget should not hide your contact details or obstruct the page.
How to decide whether it earns its place
Track questions answered accurately, useful enquiries handed to staff, bookings actually completed and staff corrections. A rise in chat messages does not by itself show that the website is helping more people.
If most conversations reveal the same missing information, fix the website too. An assistant should not become a workaround for unclear content. Explore RightLink’s AI chatbot service when you have a defined enquiry problem and want help testing a suitable response.
